Thame Women Senior Four, having defeated Kidlington and City and County in previous rounds, played in the County Finals Day at Kidlington on Sunday 6th July. The winners would qualify to represent Oxfordshire in the National Senior Fours Championship Finals at Leamington Spa in August.
The semi-final against Witney Town began at 9:30am and Thame were initially 8-0 down, but then got to grips with the green, brilliantly restricting Witney to just 3 more shots while amassing 20 of their own to win 20-11.
Lunch followed before the final started at 1:30pm against Hanborough, who had overcome South Oxford in the other semi final.
Despite some difficult afternoon wet weather, Thame never trailed and led by 6 shots 3/4 of the way through. But Hanborough gradually crept back into it. With one end to go Thame led by 14-12 and their support were optimistic for a win. However, after 15 of the 16 bowls of the last end, Hanborough were holding 2 shots and another end to decide the winner looked likely. But with her very last bowl, Hanborough‘s skip amazingly took out our nearest to secure a win by 1 shot.
All four of our team had their star moments with great shots and should be proud of their game. For the many spectators at Kidlington it was a close and exciting game, but ultimately a disappointing end for Thame’s Ladies, who had bowled exceptionally well all day.
