Thame Bowls Club Weekly Newsletter No 13

Thame Ladies played Hazells at home on 14th July and three rinks were played although being rained off twice, we played all 18 ends. Rink two with Jan Sargeant, Marion Keal and Frances Goodyear were initially behind but made a valiant effort to achieve an 11-20 [to Hazells] end score. June Greene, Philippa Feltham and Dierdre Page on rink three quickly stamped their authority on the game and had a pleasing final score of 24-12. Rink four with Wendy Mannix, Sandra French and Pauline Holmes saw each member of the team playing their part in the final 24-6 result. The overall final score of 59-38 was a satisfying result for Thame Ladies. Captain Pauline Holmes said ‘Well done and thank you to all who bowled as well as our reserve Gini Williams’.

Saturday’s match v Gerrards Cross on 19th July went ahead despite the inclement weather forecast, we made it to 15th/16th ends before donning our wet weather tops to complete the match. Thanks to our members who made sure the visitors had tops during the shower. Gerrards Cross brought their 6 triples, a big thank you to Chris Shannon for stepping in at the last minute to cover for an absentee. Gerrards Cross were a great crowd of bowlers, which always helps when playing a match. Thame came out on top winning by 4 rinks to 2 with the total score Thame 101 shots to Gerards Cross 78. Top scoring rink being rink 1 Chris Shannon, Leonard Grimshaw, Ray Plested, 24 shots to 10, closely followed by rink 6 Les Canfield, Roger Blackburn, John Holmes, 20 shots to 7. Captain Ken King said, ‘well done everyone’.

Unfortunately, Wendover cancelled the game Thame were supposed to have on Sunday 20th July but as there were a lot of names down for this game, an interclub game was organised for the players.  A very good turnout had 6 teams of triples playing against each other and it turned out to be a nice day and everyone enjoyed it. Captain Roger Blackburn said ‘Many thanks to John Holmes, who was able to stand in for someone who didn’t turn up. Despite it being a "FRIENDLY" it was still highly competitive with a team of Jean Miller, John Wilkinson and Skip Mike Zakaszewski coming out with the highest overall score’.
