Thame Bowls Club Weekly Newsletter No 11

The ladies went away to South Oxford on Thursday 26th June on lovely warm but windy afternoon. We had the usual warm welcome from South Oxford ladies. The strong gusts didn’t affect Thame’s playing as we won on all 3 rinks with an overall score of 52 - 35. The top rink was Jan Sargeant, Jill Brooks and skip Heather Hallchurch with a score of 20 - 6. The other 2 rinks both had a very tough game but on the last end they managed to beat their opponents. Wendy Mannix, Marion Keal & Deirdre Page won by 2 shots 14 - 12 and Philippa Feltham, Pauline Holmes & Sharon Heafey won by 1 shot 18 - 17. Very well-done ladies. I would like to give a special thanks to our Vice Captain, Pauline Holmes, who was Captain for the day as she did an excellent job! Jill Brooks.

The mixed team played on Saturday 28th June against High Wycombe in Thame, just two weeks after beating them at their home Green. This time however Wycombe got their own back by winning 104 – 71 on a very hot afternoon. The match was played in a very friendly spirit and Thame’s only winning rink was played by Ian Griffiths, Tony Battaglia and skip Bill Giles (who finally won on his bogey rink 3).

On Sunday 29th June Thame had a very hot afternoon at the City and County rinks; the rinks were very green and long, compared to Thame, so we knew it was going to be heavy.  The home team handled the heavy going better than Thame and this resulted in a win to City and County of 75 points Thame coming up with a very respectable 63. We did have one winning rink which was also the highest score, Ian Rutherford, Leonard Grimshaw and June Greene.  Captain Roger Blackburn said ‘Thanks to Jan who came as a travelling reserve which we needed when jill Brooks had to pull out.   Perhaps we should always take a travelling reserve as this was the second week on the trot that we needed a reserve at the venue’.
