Thame Bowls Club Weekly Newsletter No 10
The ladies travelled to Hanborough early on a dry and sunny morning on Sunday 15th June for the County Top Club. The competition consisted of 4 disciplines, singles, pairs, triples and rinks. Having been spoilt by Thame’s brilliant green, we all found Hanborough’s green quite difficult!! However, we won by 1 shot on the last end of each of 2 disciplines being the rinks and pairs. But as Hanborough’s 2 winning disciplines had more shot difference than Thame, they were declared the overall winners. The rinks were Wendy Mannix, Gini Williams, Sandra French and skip Frances Goodyear (it was Sandra and Wendy’s first time playing in the Top Club). The pairs were Jill Brooks and skip Caroline Walker. We had an enjoyable and friendly contest and appreciated Hanborough’s hospitality after the match. Well done to all the ladies and a special thank you to new member, Dawn Lawley, for stepping in at the last moment to be our travelling reserve. Hanborough will now go on to the quarter final to play the winners of City & County and West Witney.
A glorious day at Princes Risborough on Sunday 15th June, and even though we were missing one player, a highly contested game. The scores didn’t really reflect the quality of the bowls played by Thame. The overall scores of 3 rinks to Risborough and 2 to Thame with a shot count of 95 to 65. The top rink was David White, Mike Zakaszewski and Jenny Reed who turned round a 15-1 deficit at 8 ends to win 20 points to 17. The top rink was highly contested by the doubles team of David Holland and Marion Keal who despite being one player short managed to win with a score of 16 to 15. Captain Roger Blackburn.
On a warm, sunny evening, 16th June, Heather Hallchurch, Deirdre Page, Pauline Holmes and Caroline Walker had a good win against the National Senior Fours ladies’ team from Kidlington: by 30-6. Captain Heather said ‘We were delighted and encouraged to see all our friends and really appreciated the support. Thank you!’
The next round is away to City and County on 30th June.
