Match Reports

Thame Bowls Club Weekly Newsletter No 9

Captain Colin French reports ‘It seems ages since we had a midweek game, and fortunately since the last game, the weather has improved.

By the time we reached Waddesdon on Tuesday 10th June, the sun was out and the wind abating. The green looked in very good condition and our host captain Paul introduced himself to me, we put our heads together to get the cards done. As with Thame, Waddesdon have suffered around the edges of the Green, so we all had slightly reduced rink widths. We started off with a spider, won by a Waddesdon player. It all started well but as usual some rinks started to fall away. We were playing five triples and won two and almost pulled off a draw with a third, leaving the shot score as Thame 79, Waddesdon 80, a loss by 1 shot, almost my Waterloo but unfortunately, I ended up Napolean.

All teams of course, played as best as they could, and enjoyed the game, it made a lovely day, and we were supported by our President. Credit to our top scoring team of John Holmes, Heather Hallchurch and Ian Griffiths with a shot score of 25 to 10. Dave Holland, Ken Lewis and Jan Sargeant, won by 15 to 12. And I must mention Caroline Walker, Deidre Page and Chris Roberts who at end 10 were trailing 3 shots to 15 but eventually pulled back to 17 to 18, a great try. Our other scores being 12 to 17 and 10 to 23. I'm chuffed, so very well done everyone’.

The ladies match against Princes Risborough away scheduled for Wednesday 11th June was cancelled at the last minute by the home side as they were unable to get even two triples together.

The men’s League team played at home to Bicester on Thursday 12th June and regrettably suffered another defeat by 73 shots to 60. There was one winning rink played by Adrian Wilcox, Jamie Challoner, Leonard Grimshaw and skip, Ian Rutherford who won 20 – 16. They gained 1 league point against Bicester’s 5 and are rock bottom after 5 games (the halfway stage) with 7 points.

Saturday 14th June saw Thame’s mixed team visit High Wycombe at their attractive ground on a Green which showed much variation from rink to rink. The weather was fine and the welcome from the friendly hosts, even finer. Despite the tea break halfway through which tends to spoil the rhythm of a keenly contested match, Thame ran out winners by 81 shots to 76. Thame’s highest winning rink was played by Gini Williams, Tony Battaglia and skip Mike Ralls who won 25-13.
