Thame Bowls Club Weekly Newsletter No 8
On Thursday 29th May, Thame’s men were beaten 5 points to 1 away at Woodstock on a very heavy and erratic green. Most shots were won by those who could bowl the furthest and miss all the short bowls in the way – not a game we are used to or wish to develop. Ian Rutherford’s rink secured the only win, with help from his team of Adrian Wilcox, Jamie Challenor and Leonard Grimshaw. An evening as enjoyable as a visit to the dentist.
On Thursday 5th June, Thame entertained Charlbury in the Oxfordshire Men’s League and after raining all day, it dried up and the green bowled beautifully, allowing us to win our first league match by 4 points to 2. The end shots total was 65 to 59. Highest winning rink was Ray Plested, John Holmes, Barry Green and Dave Hickman who won 22-15. Home again next week to Bicester, who had to call their home game off last night as the green was unplayable. These points were not enough to move up the League table, but the signs are there for an improving season.
On Saturday 7th June, Thame’s mixed team played Bicester at home and Captain Ken King gave this report ‘Many thanks to both teams' support for this fixture against a doom and gloom weather forecast; it was a great afternoon despite the odd bit of rain and we completed 18 ends. The overall score, although disappointing, Bicester 90 to Thame 66, was offset by our two winning rinks; top rink was Tony Battaglia, Geoff Roynon and Bill Giles 24 shots to 10, and our very worthy second winning rink was our all-lady team of Philippa Feltham, Heather Hallchurch and Deirdre Page 18 shots to 10. Thanks must also go to our reserve rink who turned out to support the club. They were John Wilkinson, Alfred Jochum, Nigel Legard, Steve Silver, John Hurley and Mike Zak. Steve was loaned out to Bicester and the least said about that decision the better.’
