Thame Bowls Club Weekly Newsletter No 20

On Tuesday 10th September, Thame travelled to Bassetsbury Manor and were welcomed by Captain David and his team who had worked very hard to provide the five rinks required, considering the green was flooded on the Sunday. The day was not the best weatherwise, cold damp interspersed with rain showers, the green quite heavy to start, but all teams were even until the halfway mark. We had asked to play the 18 ends straight through due to impending rain and this was agreed, but unfortunately it didn't help Thame as all rinks went downhill, with only one rink managing to claw back a draw. Captain Colin French said, ‘I'll blame the weather as it really did feel cold’. The end result was Thame 49 shots and Bassetsbury Manor 99. He looks forward to next week’s game with the hope of a better result.

Thame hosted Hazells Bowls Club for the final home game of our centenary year on Sunday 15th September. The weather was on the dull side, but it didn't dampen our spirits. We only won on one of the 6 rinks and drew on another but in an amazing game on rink 6, Gini Williams, Mike Zakaszewski and skip John Holmes had a remarkable comeback from 19 shots to 3 down after 12 ends to pull back 15 shots on the last 6 ends to come within 1 shot. This, and the team of Tony Battaglia, Jill Brooks and skip Bill Giles, Captain for the day, who were top rink winning by 20 shots to 9, enabled Thame to win by 94 shots to 93. Great thanks go to Chris Shannon and his team for preparing an excellent green and for Chris for running the bar after the end of the game.

On Thursday 19th September, Thame were welcomed by Captain Martin and members of Marlow Bowls Club. The weather was just right, with lots of sun and the green looked great and for Captain Colin French, played well. We started out in fine form, but the game went the usual way, and the team lost 93 to 106. Of the six triples we won two and drew one so a good all-round performance. Our top rink to be congratulated, was Sandra French, Jill Brooks, and skip Norman Hyde. Unfortunately, there are no more midweek games this season, but I think all will be looking forward to the next.

The Chairman versus Secretary Match has now been postponed to Saturday, 28th September because of the weather.
