Thame Bowls Club Weekly Newsletter No 19

On Tuesday 27th August, Thame travelled to Aston Clinton with 3 triples plus one extra skip, (thanks to Bill Giles for helping with this). This to play with their spare triple team as a pairs team. Captain Colin French was welcomed by Sheila, Captain of the Day, and her teams. We all started very well and at 9 ends tea break were all in a good position; sadly, it then goes pear shaped at the restart, (is it something Bucks teams put in the tea?). But all teams recovered, and Thame went on to win 70 shots to 60.  Many thanks to Jean, Astons tea maker and bar lady, Captain Sheila and her team for their warm welcome also to our players for their effort on a lovely summers’ day.

The ladies match scheduled for Wednesday 28th August was called off by opponents High Wycombe as they were unable to get a side together.

On Tuesday 3rd September, both lady’s and men’s teams played the annual fixture against Amersham; the ladies played away with 3 triples at Amersham and won overall by 5 shots with a score of 49 - 44. The winning rink was Sandra French, Jan Baker and skip Caroline Walker 21 - 17. Amersham ladies were very welcoming, and the match was enjoyed by all in a lovely setting. Caroline Walker was the captain of the day in the absence of Jill Brooks who congratulated them all on their win and a special thank you to Caroline for stepping in at the last moment as well as Jan Baker for the late call up. This is the penultimate ladies match as there is a rearranged match against Wendover away on the 26th of September.

The men played at home and Captain Roger Blackburn said ‘a lovely day for bowls, nice and warm with the green in great condition, if you forget about the shot score the game was drawn with two rinks each.  The actual score was 59 to Thame and 72 to Amersham. Our top rink was Roger Blackburn, Leonard Grimshaw and David Hickman with a score of 21-16.  Closely followed by Chris Shannon, John Holmes and Vic Webb with a score of 17-14. The match was very close and played in great spirit.  Amersham’s Captain said the club looked forward every year to the twin fixture of ladies at one venue and gents at the other on the same day’.
