The Short Mat Pairs Competition reached a climax on 7th February with the Final being played by Byron Harvey and Bill Giles against Deirdre Page and Sandra French.

The Final was incredibly close, initial ends scoring just one shot to one side or the other and the match went into the final 10th end with the score at 8-7 to Bill and Byron.  It looked as if an 11th end might be needed because one each of Byron’s and Sandra’s bowls looked inseparably close to the jack and a careful measure was needed because the naked eye couldn’t determine which was nearest.  Millimetres were in it but Byron’s bowl won out to finish the match with Bill and Byron winning 9-7.  A dramatic end to a great match watched by an absorbed crowd.

The third place final was also very closely contested, if not quite to such a dramatic end, with Geoff Roynon and Keith Brooks overcoming Robin Hicks and Irene Park by 3 shots.

Given our Chairman was one of the winners, organiser Ian presented the medals kindly bought by Keith, who thankfully received one of them!
