Saturday 6th June
After a late consultation with Bicester’s captain, it was decided to travel to Bicester for our match. Unfortunately, yet again we arrived at 1.20 pm for a 2.00pm start only to be told it's 2.30. At this stage the rain was fairly light, but it continued and got heavier, and having completed 11 ends on four rinks 12 ends on two, it was decided to call it a day. Thanks to all members who endured the conditions.
The result was 3 rinks to Thame and 3 rinks to Bicester; the overall result was Bicester 69 to Thame 54. Our winning rink was June Greene, Dave Holland, Ken King 14 shots to 3. Our thanks must go to our regular supporters Maire and Ron Duncan who endured a good few ends and sensibly made an early exit. Captain Ken King.
Sunday 7th June
Thame Ladies played in the Top Club Competition at home against Oxford City & County on Sunday 7th June. The match began at 10.00am and Chris and his team had been out at 8.00am mowing the grass, which looked very good and played excellently. Thank you Chris and his team.
The competition has four disciplines; singles, doubles, a triple and rinks. Heather Hallchurch played the singles and battled heroically against a very accomplished player losing by just 8 shots, 13 – 21. The pairs consisting of Caroline Walker and Carol Slawson had a real battle on their hands and were behind until 5 ends from the finish when they scored a 3 to put them ahead. They won eventually 16 – 13.
The triples with Sharon Heafey, Jill Brooks and Philippa Feltham gradually took the lead and won by a creditable 19 – 11 with Oxford conceding on the 16th end. The rinks match had ever reliable Jan Sargeant and Wendy Mannix making a solid starting pair, with Pauline Prangle as third and Pauline Holmes as skip. Thame quickly took the lead and they won 22 – 9 with Oxford conceding on the 16th end. They were the best rink overall.
Thank you to Maire Duncan and Ann Ashfield for a lovely tea with cake and strawberry refreshments – and thank you to all our supporters. Thame are now in the quarter finals on Sunday 12th July at home. The opposition will be Banbury Borough. Well done ladies, a very satisfying win. Captain Pauline Holmes.
