Match Reports

Saturday 27th June

Whilst the weather for Saturday's match at High Wycombe was marginally cooler than previous days it was jointly agreed to restrict the match to 14 ends.

Although we agreed to bowl straight through, the ladies of High Wycombe kindly delivered tea, green side at end 7; this was very much appreciated by all, some rinks stopped and others carried on drinking between shots.

Most rinks were quite close, up to the halfway point, however this could not be maintained, and High Wycombe ran out winners 4 rinks to 1 and overall 65 shots to 50.

Our winning rink was no. 3, Peter Hall, Trevor Watkins and Ken King who won by 19 shots to 6.

Thanks to all members who made themselves available for the match, especially those who had a late call due to the county fours clash of fixture time.

 Captain Ken King

Saturday 27th June

Having defeated South Oxford in the previous round, we faced a formidable Banbury Central side in the Over 60s Mixed Two Fours Tony Allcock National Trophy on Saturday morning.  Given Banbury Central were Oxfordshire champions last year, we knew we’d need top form to overcome a team including many County players.

We put up a strong fight and unsettled them, but ultimately fell short, losing only four shots on one rink and five on the other. Banbury Central now play the Berkshire champions at a neutral venue.

Sunday 28th June

On Sunday 28th, Deirdre Page and Ian Rutherford were Thame’s only entrants in the Oxfordshire Mixed Australian Pairs competition held at City and County.

Thirty-four teams from across the county competed, with the goal of narrowing the field to four pairs for the semi-finals and final, both to be played at a later date.

Throughout the day Deirdre and Ian played 34 ends of Aussie Pairs, ultimately securing a quarter-final spot which they won to qualify for the semi-finals in August. Well done to both.

Sunday 28th June

A last-minute phone call from Oxford City and County on Saturday evening reduced the match to 4 triples instead of 5, which caused some re-organisation and disappointed members. Despite reducing it to 4 triples they still arrived one short, but we were able to lend them a player.

The weather was much cooler than the previous 3 or 4 days so it was a pleasant afternoon bowls.   It was a very close match, 2 rinks all with only 1 point difference in the overall score.  60 to Thame 61 to Oxford City and County.

Our highest rink was David Hollands team again with Carol Slawson and Nigel Legard. This was despite having our loaned played Chris Shannon against him.  This season David Holland has won every game he has played on the Sunday fixtures, well done David.

 Captain Roger Blackburn.

Tuesday 30th June

On a nice sunny day, thankfully not too hot, a lady’s team of 2 triples made the trip to Watlington.  We arrived a bit early and they made us all a cup of tea before we started.  The team of Jill Brooks skip, Philippa Feltham, and Terri Blackburn/Marion Keal, who shared a game, were losing by halfway and then managed to turn it around to win 18 - 13.  In the other match Jenny Reed skip, Pauline Prangle and Jan Sargeant could never quite get on terms and lost 19 - 9. This meant that we lost 32 - 27 overall.

Despite the loss Watlington were very friendly hosts and it was an enjoyable afternoon.
