Thame Bowls Club Weekly Newsletter No 1/2026
Sunday 19th April
A lovely sunny Sunday afternoon to welcome Marlow for our first match of the season.
The green looked and played spectacularly. Thanks to Chris Shannon and his green keeping team, to have the green in this condition so early in the season is remarkable.
Thanks to Ken Lewis for stepping in at the last moment. The results were 3 rinks all with an overall shot count of 88 to Thame and 99 to Marlow. Considering all six rinks were in operation with 18 ends to have an 11 point difference over 108 ends is good. Our top rink was Colin French, Jan Sargeant and John Walker. The game was played in very good spirits and Marlow are looking forward to our return visit.

I'll leave it short. We were welcomed by Captain Tony and his team from Princes Risborough, and with rinks sorted we started on time. It could not have been a better day weather wise to play our first midweek, but for most of us the games didn't achieve the same quality. All teams tried their best, but few of us could get the better of the green, and some very good bowling by the opposition. The cards reflect our need to improve. We did have a winning rink with David White and his team of Leonard Grimshaw and June Greene, who managed to get eleven of the eighteen ends, with a shot score of Thame 18 P/Risborough 11. As for the rest of us? Thame 53, P/Risborough 108. Keep at it, first time out on a different green.

Saturday 25th April
A glorious afternoon saw the visit of Maidenhead Thicket to Thame, and they had been very accommodating to increase the match to a six rink triples because of the number of Thame players available. Unfortunately, they were not quite so accommodating with the score as they comprehensively won by 147 shots to Thame’s 77. Thame did have two winning rinks, and the best of which was the all-ladies’ team of Wendy Mannix, Pauline Holmes and skip Jenny Reed. Despite the score the game was enjoyed by all, on the first Saturday of the season.
