Thame Bowls Club weekly newsletter 17
Despite the mention in the last newsletter, the Ladies did play in the semi-final of the Top Club at South Oxford on 14 August; it was changed because South Oxford Ladies wanted to play and get it over with and Thame did not want to concede.
It was, of course, very hot even though we started a bit earlier at 9.30am. We lost on 3 disciplines and won on 1, which was the pairs with Caroline Walker as skip and Jill Brooks leading. We were losing 7 - 17 on the 12th end, but then won the following 6 ends with 16 shots making a score of 23 - 17. Heather Hallchurch had a very close match in the singles and lost on the last end 19 - 21. The triples, consisting of Margaret Boynton, Maire Duncan and skip Barbara Waters and the fours with Marion Keal, Jan Sargeant, Deirdre Page and skip Frances Goodyear lost their disciplines, but only by a very close margin.
South Oxford Ladies’ will play in the final against Banbury Borough who beat City & County in the other semi-final.
A great afternoon was had by all on Tuesday 16 August when members who lived in Thame took on those who lived in the towns and villages outside. The match started in the rain, the first time we had to put on wet weather gear for months, but it soon cleared up and the sun even made a brief appearance. 40 members played 12 ends of rinks in a very friendly way with the result a small win for Thame. Afterwards we all sat down to a cream tea. Thanks go out to everyone who worked so hard to make this a most enjoyable afternoon.
The matches scheduled for Saturday 20 August against Long Crendon and Sunday 21 August against Henley were both cancelled but on the Sunday, 22 members played a version of Aussie Rinks and Triples where everyone in each team played in all the positions from lead through to skip. It was a tremendous afternoon full of fun and laughter and enjoyed by all and played in the spirit that shows the best of Lawn bowls. There were no winners or losers with every match very closely contested.
