Once again the weather obliged and we had a fantastic turnout for this annual end of season match between the Chairman and Secretary’s nominated teams. Our Chairman Byron shrewdly asked Jill Brooks to help him choose his team from the 52 bowlers who elected to play, and Jill and Chris succeeded in selecting very balanced sides to ensure we enjoyed a close match of 6 rinks over 16 ends where everyone who wanted to take part played some bowls in the match.
Both sides won three rinks each, with Roger Blackburn’s team of Sandra French, Jean Miller and Norman Hyde performing best for the Chairman’s side. Chris Shannon and Ian Rutherford played 8 ends each for the Secretary's side, and with a huge team of shared bowlers featuring Maire Duncan, Jackie Emberson, Nigel Legard, Gordon Taylor and Janet Shannon. They were on fire, achieving the highest shot difference of the day on a tricky rink one.
As expected, it was a very close match and the final result turned on the last end played on rink 4 were the Secretary’s skip managed to give away a 3 shot position with his last bowl. This resulted in Chairman Byron winning the match overall by 2 shots 81 to 79. So, congratulations to Byron and his great team for this splendid win, no doubt the Secretary will be plotting his revenge for the match next year.
Most importantly, everyone had a fantastic day playing good natured competitive bowls with good friends on an excellent surface that all comers have enjoyed playing on all year. We were treated to delicious home baked lemon drizzle cake prepared by our own “Mary Berry” (but much younger of course) – Terri Blackburn, who also manned the kitchen all day until the bowlers relieved her after the game. Thank you, Terri and everyone else who manned the bar and kitchen throughout the day.
All in all, a super day – lets look forward to much more enjoyable home play next year at our splendid friendly club.
