Thame Bowls Club Weekly Newsletter No 19
Well, the best thing about our game v Aston Clinton on Tuesday 26th August was that we all enjoyed the afternoon. The weather was kind, cloudy, a slight breeze and when the sun broke through, quite hot. The green played very well collecting compliments from the Aston players. Unfortunately, we lost again on all four rinks, with the final score Thame 52 Aston Clinton 77. Our best rink being no. 5 led by John Holmes who although starting badly, fought back to within one shot for a final score of 15 to 16 against. Our ladies team led by Frances Goodyear, were equal to their opposition but sadly succumbed on the last two ends, hard luck ladies. Thanks must go to the green keeper and the team, also to Philippa Feltham and the ladies for the tea, setting the tables and clearing away, Ken for the bar, and all players for helping with the tables. Captain Colin French.
The annual men’s match against Amersham took place on Tuesday 2nd September. Thanks to all the members who braved the elements to play, and yes it rained for the whole match. Conditions were not improved using protective mats at both ends, however Thame took the rinks 4 to 1. The four rinks were mostly very close, and our top rink was number three, Nigel Legard, Leonard Grimshaw and Ian Rutherford winning 20 shots to 14 after being 14-13 down at 14th end. The match of the afternoon for me was rink 5 Tony Battaglia, John Wilkinson and Roger Blackburn who came from 11-1 down at end 7, 19-9 down at end 12 to win 23 -21 at the end. A great show of resilience in very trying conditions. Captain Ken King.
Also on the 2nd of September, Thame ladies welcomed Amersham at home. The weather forecast was not too good, but we were lucky as there was only a sprinkling of rain at the start of the game. That was when our luck run out as we lost on all three rinks with Amersham winning by a score of 54 to 29. Our lowest losing rink with a score of 10 - 16 was Wendy Mannix, Marion Keal and skip Pauline Holmes. Besides losing, it was still an enjoyable match. Thank you, ladies, and well done. Captain Jill Brooks.
September 2nd marked a day of change at Thame Bowls Club; Jill Brooks retired as Ladies Captain. The ladies had played bowls against Amersham and after tea Jill was presented with a bouquet of flowers, a wooden elephant (elephants are a favourite of Jill) and a thank you card containing a gift voucher to be spent at the Thame Jewellery Workshop. Jill was delighted with her gifts, and the occasion marked a happy ending of her 8-year tenure as ladies captain.
