Thame Bowls Club Weekly News Report No 9
Thame Men’s League Team were soundly beaten on Thursday 13th June by an accomplished Kidlington team who are currently in second place. It was extremely cold and wet with possibly the worst weather conditions of the season, thus far, and Thame went down 93 – 38 with Ian Rutherford’s foursome getting closest, only losing by 4 shots. This result dropped Thame to sixth place out of seven.
On Saturday 15th June, Captain Ian Rutherford said that players on both sides were expecting an early call to say that the match was off after a soggy wet morning, but surprisingly they enjoyed warm sunshine during the afternoon. Despite winning on 2 of the 5 rinks, we lost 95 / 73 because our 2 winning rinks sadly only won by 1 shot each, these played by Ken King, Jill Brooks and Dave Holland and Tony Battaglia, Deirdre Page and Ian Rutherford. We have every opportunity to gain revenge on the 29th with the reverse fixture at Wycombe which has also been reduced to 5 rinks.
On Sunday 16th June, Captain Adrian Wilcox said that ‘this fixture, at home to Princes Risborough, was played in the best tradition of the game of Bowls, great company excellent weather (take note Bill), and I managed not to play but enjoyed the company of the opposition captain Tony. We had a good chin wag and put the world to right in 10 minutes. It looked like they brought their best team, so I won’t talk about the score. I would like to thank the people who stepped in at the last minute to help me out, especially Leonard Grimshaw and Ken King, after several people let me down’.
On Wednesday 19th June, Jill Brooks captained the ladies away at Aylesbury Town with 4 triples; the weather was good and the opposition friendly as always. Unfortunately, Thame lost on 3 triples, the only winning rink with a score of 21 - 11 was Irene Park, Sandra French and skip Heather Hallchurch. The overall score was Thame 58 to Aylesbury’s 74.
